Abstract In order to reveal the differences in mechanical responses of granite and limestone when penetrated by TBM, the double disc cutters rock breaking mechanism and the influencing factors have been investigated by using the methods including measurement of mechanical parameters of standard rock specimen, ABAQUS-SPH numerical simulation and field measurement. As the results suggest, the ABAQUS-SPH numerical simulation method is effective in simulating rock deformation and failure state during rock breaking by disc cutters; the torque of the disc cutter is sensitive to the cutting sequence, while the disc cutter thrust is sensitive to the rock strength. When rock strength increases, the disc cutter needs much more thrust to cut to the same level. Under the calculated parameters in this study, the rock breaking efficiency of the disc cutter when penetrating limestone stratum is higher than the efficiency when penetrating granite stratum, and the rock ridge width between cutters is in direct proportion to rock strength.
