Abstract Considering the large deformations occurred at Maoyushan tunnel exit, construction control and deformations were classified, and the affecting factors for large deformations were discussed. Results indicated that high ground stresses and lithology were the main factors for deformation, while geologic structure was the secondary one. Deformation development can be effectively constrained by improving construction technology and enhancing support stiffness to assure tunnel construction safty.
