Elasto-Plastic Analysis of the Surrounding Rock of a Tunnel/Roadway Based on the Zienkiewicz-Pande Criterion

Abstract In this paper, based on the Zienkiewicz-Pande criterion, which is a modification of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, and considering the effects of intermediate principal stress, analytic solutions for the elastic-plastic stress of the surrounding rock of a tunnel/roadway, as well as the radius and displacement of the plastic zone, are deduced using an equilibrium equation. The influence of the intermediate principal stress on the Zienkiewicz-Pande criterion solution is analyzed through a given example, and the plastic zone radius and the distribution of surrounding rock stress are analyzed based on the Zienkiewicz-Pande and Mohr-Coulomb criterions, respectively, showing that the Zienkiewicz-Pande criterion is applicable to the elasto-plastic analysis of the surrounding rock in a tunnel/roadway.
