Abstract The rapid driving techniques of a shield machine under a section with shallow overburden, i.e. URUP, is generally used for building underground passageways at crossroads and interchanges, and it is characterized by a short construction period and less impact on the environment and existing architectural structures compared to the conventional shield method. In this paper, the technical features, key steps, shield sections and an application case of this method are introduced in detail.
