Abstract Aiming at the problems existing in the current evaluation methods for the health status of road tunnels, a equilibrium evaluation model is proposed which evaluates the health status of the road tunnels based on the distribution equilibrium of relevant physical and mechanical parameters, and the degree of equilibrium is defined by the coefficients of variation and imbalance. The research shows the disequilibrium of pressure distribution of surrounding rocks has little effect on safety of tunnel structure while the equilibrium of ground resistance distribution has significant effect on safety of tunnel structure under condition of uniform distribution of adequate ground resistance; in order to ensure the safety of tunnel structure, the proper coefficients of ground resistance variation and disequilibrium should be no more than 0.5 , 0.3 respectively and the coefficients of variation and disequilibrium must be no more than 0.7 and 0.6 respectively within the scope under the tunnel haunch.
