Abstract In light of the unfavorable geological conditions of urban tunnels with complex environments and high requirements of deformation control, it′s necessary to adopt proper construction method for urban tunnels. By taking the large-span Zizhi tunnel in Hangzhou as an example, different excavation methods like CRD method, double side drift method and reserved core method are compared regarding the advantages and disadvantages of above methods, the crown settlement, horizontal convergence and ground surface settlement of the large-span junction of this tunnel under different construction methods are especially analyzed by FEM model, and the rationality of reserved core method adopted in the construction of large-span Zizhi tunnel is verified by a comparison of the calculation values and the measured values.
