Abstract The determination of mechanical parameters of rock mass is one of the key links during engineering con? struction, the rationality of the method and result is of great importance for the study of surrounding rock stability and support design. Based on the Hoek-Brown strength criterion, the characteristics of this method and determination results as well as the differences from that of empirical method stipulated in standard and the inherent sources are discussed systematically. In general terms, the Hoek-Brown strength criterion based determination method for mechanical parameters comprehensively considers the effects of three key geological factors of lithology, rock quality and stress. Compared with the method stipulated in standard, this method fully considers the diversities of geological factors and the differences of determined mechanical parameters. The engineering practice in deep-buried rock mass shows this method is relatively reasonable compared with the conventional M-C strength theory and the specified parameter determination method based on it.
