Abstract When the earth pressure balance shield passes under the crowded buildings in upper-soft and lowerhard stratum with shallow-buried depth, it is easy to cause building damages. Taking the Changsha-ZhuzhouXiangtan intercity railway project as an example, in which a ?9.34 m earth pressure balance shield passes under the Nanhu hardware market, it puts forward the construction technology for the shield passing under dense buildings in unfavorable geological conditions, and describes the building foundation reinforcement technology, control technology of shield driving, soil conditioning technology as well as adaptive modification of the shield equipment, building assessment identification, etc. The application results show that, through implementing the combined construction methods, the deformation of the building group is effectively controlled, and no adverse social influences such as housing cracking, tilting and collapse are caused, thus ensuring the smooth construction of shield tunnelling.
