Abstract Rock mass classification is the basis for understanding the properties of rock masses in tunnel engineer? ing, and plays an important guiding role in tunnel engineering design theory, design calculation parameters, reasonable selection for construction methods and construction techniques. This article reviews the development history of rock mass classification in tunnel engineering both domestically and internationally, introduces two typical rock mass classifications in tunnel engineering, and proposes the development trend of tunnel engineering rock mass classification for the future and beyond.
