Abstract Hadapu tunnel on Lanzhou-Chongqing railway passes through carbonaceous slate and carbonaceous shale(with local phyllite), and the strike of surrounding rocks basically parallels with the tunnel axis. High convergence deformations occurred due to large horizontal stresses during the tunnel construction. The paper describes the large deformations on vertical slate sections in Hadapu tunnel, and analyses the causes involved in terms of horizontal stresses, underground water, geostatic stresses and section type of the tunnel. Then it puts forward controlling measures such as support with high stiffness, prompt casting of secondary lining and monitoring.
