Abstract Triple-track Xinzuofang tunnel with large profile on the newly built Lanzhou-Chongqing railway was designed to be constructed by double side-heading method. The construction technology and monitoring measures involved are presented in this paper. The inappropriateness of construction technology of the original design and some optimized measures of construction procedure are analyzed. The practice indicated that the new technology played a significant role in the construction of Xinzuofang tunnel and the optimized construction techniques can be taken for  reference by the similar design and construction of railway tunnel with large profile.
