Abstract Using the portal section of the Galongla tunnel as a prototype, model-scale relationships were set up, the analogous materials of surrounding rocks and lining were chosen, and a model for the vibration attenuation test was created. A buffer layer was set around the model. Furthermore, the loading system was established and a loading test on a vibrating platform was carried out. Meanwhile, the test results were analyzed and compared to those of finite-element analysis and vibration attenuation ratios were determined. The dynamic characteristics and the effect of the vibration attenuation layer were analyzed from two aspects of stresses and strains. Results verified the efficiency of the buffer layer.
