Abstract  Selection of retaining structures is one of the key issues for cut-and-cover tunnel construction in soft rocks. Considering the tunnel project under-crossing the Kunming 3rd ring road, a comparison was carried out between: cut-and-cover construction; a bored-pile retaining structure with bracings; and a cantilever-pile retaining structure. The advantages and characteristics of cantilever-pile retaining structures in urban tunnel works were analyzed.
