Abstract  The Zhongwei Yellow River tunnel, the "throat project" and standby passage of the west-east gas transmission programme as well as main passage of west-east gas transmission line 2, has a maximum capacity for gas transmission of 470×108 m3/year. The engineering geology, hydrogeology, design philosophy, and construction practice of Zhongwei Yellow River tunnel are introduced, and the design and construction characteristics of a submerged tunnel for oil and gas transmission are summarized.
