Abstract There are many problems encountered for the cutterhead and its cutters during shield driving due to the geological variations of large tunnels, especially the wearing of the cutterhead and damage to the cutters. Therefore, it is very important to carry out technical management of the cutterhead and cutters during the operation of a large-diameter slurry shield under complex geological conditions. Using the shield driving of the Shiziyang tunnel as an example, this paper summarizes applied techniques for cutterheads of slurry shields following a causal analysis of cutterhead wear and cutter damage as well as corresponding technical management.
