Abstract  Analytical design is one of the main methods of tunnel support design used for tunneling under special geological conditions. This paper introduces the principles, content and application of analytical design. The effects of analytical design were analyzed along with data concerning convergence of surrounding rock which was collected at a specific project; the satisfactory results are presented. The weaknesses of analytical design are also discussed.
