Abstract Based on the monitoring of building settlement, ground settlement and displacement of surrounding rock during tunnel expansion within a frost zone, this paper analyzes and discusses the factors affecting construction safety. The results indicate that tunnel expansion had less impact on building settlement and displacement of surrounding rock than on ground settlement. The buildings and ground were slightly affected by the rainy season, except in the open-cut zone-especially the slopes. The buildings and ground in the open-cut zone are more affected by seasonal frost than the bored tunnel zone is; while the displacement of surrounding rock in the bored tunnel section is minimally affected by the frost zone, the ground settlement in the arterial line is greatly affected by it. The use of temporary steel struts to control displacement of surrounding rock and ground settlement is discussed.
