Abstract A composite lining includes a waterproof sheet and a drainage system, which makes the underground water behind the tunnel lining drain mainly through a blind pipe, filter layer and drainage hole at the sidewall into the bottom of the drainage ditch. Therefore, it is usually very difficult to calculate the external water pressure on the composite lining by a simple analytical method. This paper, from a practical point of view, proposed a new concept-equivalent permeability coefficient of the composite lining-and its corresponding determination method. The equivalent permeability coefficient of the composite lining can represent the infiltration ability of the waterproof sheet and drainage system, and the introduction of this concept into the composite lining greatly simplified the calculation of the external water pressure on the composite lining. Finally, an engineering example is provided to validate the rationality and validity of this method.
