Abstract Key construction technologies are quite important to ensure the construction quality, schedule, cost and security of a subway project under complex conditions. In this paper, the determination of a technical approach and the related key technologies are discussed using the Zhongjie Station as an example in order to determine how to choose the correct construction technologies for a subway station under complex conditions. Results show that some technologies, such as reinforcement with grouting, long-span arch construction, geological forecasting and waterproofing, play a key role in effectively controlling ground settlement, protecting surrounding buildings and keeping pipelines safe during the construction of a large-span tunnel near buildings or in unstable ground.
