Abstract Construction of a tunnel at the dividing line between loess and rock is difficult because of poor rock mass and inadequate self-stability. This paper introduces the key points, proper excavation procedures, and bench height and bench length for the construction of the large-section loess railway tunnel at the dividing line of loess and rock based on the successful completion of the Zhongnan railway tunnel.
