Abstract Tunneling in high-speed railways is characterized by high construction standards, great construction difficulties, high safety risks and strict construction management requirements. Taking the Guiguang high-speed railway as an example, this paper analyzes several key problems that restrict construction efficiency and safety. Based on the current technical status of domestic railway tunnel construction, some conclusions were drawn: 1) Excavation with the micro bench method utilizing precise blasting technology can solve the contradiction between excavation advancement and keeping a safe distance between different processes for rocks class IV and V; 2) Trackless transportation, which benefits from the progress of ventilation technology and air purification technology, is applicable to the construction of long tunnels with large sections; 3) Developing and applying fast construction equipment for tunnel invert construction and movable formworks for the construction of water ditches and cable grooves filled a gap in this field; and 4) Information-oriented construction is the trend of tunnel construction technology development in the future.
