Abstract    Using the abnormal cracking in the Xuanzhenguan tunnel on the Lanzhou-Chongqing railway as case study, this paper seeks the causes of the cracking by examining the tunnel structure, support measures, construction situations, ground properties, high geostress, etc. A qualitative and quantitative analysis, with a combination of supplementary exploration and numerical analysis, was conducted in order to understand the main causes of the tunnel lining cracking in the sandy mudstone. As a result, high geostress was proven to be the main cause, and treatment principles are given accordingly.
