Abstract  Based on the field geological investigation and monitoring measurements regarding the large deformation that occurred in the Siping tunnel on the Gucheng-Zhuxi expressway, which passes through a strongly weathered and thin stratified shale formation, the characteristics, mechanisms, and construction control measures for the large deformation were analyzed in terms of geological conditions, buried depth, soft rock characteristics, bias pressure, and construction factors. During the construction of the Siping tunnel, the surrounding rock deformation was effectively controlled by means of increasing support stiffness, improving mechanical behavior, determining the reasonable deformation allowance, installing the advance pre-support and multiple support, excavating with the extra-short bench method, controlled blasting, controlled driving cycle, and so on.
