Abstract Rational selection of the type of lining structure in tunnel construction is one of the major measures for improving tunnel construction quality, shortening the construction period and reducing comprehensive construction costs. Based on the introduction of domestic and international lining structure types for shield tunnels and their application statuses, this paper puts emphasis on a new tunnel lining system, the Casting Support Tunnelling System Using TBM (CSTSUT),which has been presented and successfully applied in Japanese shield tunnelling. The technical and economic analysis for existing shield-tunnel lining types reveals that the CSTSUT has unique advantages in terms of economy and technology compared to traditional lining structures in shield tunnels when the tunnels are longer and deeper, especially for construction in water-rich non-consolidated formations.
