Abstract Insufficient understanding of the characteristics of surrounding rock may cause problems with construction quality and economic losses due to various types of geological structures and the frequent change of rock mass properties during tunnel construction. Based on the construction of tunnels on the Kunming-Nanning passenger dedicated line, this paper discusses the characteristics of surrounding rock under different geological conditions and proposes corresponding measures in light of a comprehensive engineering geological analysis in order to give scientific guidance and ensure construction progress.
