Abstract In a perspective of modern tunnelling philosophy, some problems on conventional tunnelling in soft rock mass were discussed. The development process of rock mechanical behavior and deformation caused by excavation is attributed to the change course from yielding to discrete. Some effective control means were presented as well and the effect of advanced support system was evaluated. As to the deformation controlling technology for squeezing ground, the theory and design principle of yielding support system were introduced.
