Abstract:
In order to understand the mechanism of soil plough-loosening by shield cutters under different cutter spacings in a sandy cobble stratum, a simulation model of soil plough-loosening by the cutters was established with PFC2D grain-flow software based on the 2D discrete-element method and several sets of experiments were designed to simulate the contact force chain and variation process in front of the cutter. Three typical types of plough-loosening modes were identified. These modes are interchangeable upon different cutter spacing and cut depth, and the plough-loosening area varies with the plough-loosening mode. This paper introduces the concept of plough-loosening efficiency. The optimum cutter spacing is given based on a comparison of the plough-loosening efficiencies.
