Abstract Using the Qiaozhuang tunnel on Jiyuan-Shaoyuan expressway as the background, a two-dimensional elasto-plastic FE model for the tunnel section in soft rock was established, simulating the whole tunnel construction process, including the effects of developed forces and rock displacements. A comparison of the model and tunnel monitoring indicated that the measured crown settlements, horizontal convergences of side walls, and support forces agreed with the calculated values, and that the combination of in-situ monitoring and FE simulation can provide scientific and technical guidance for tunnel lining design and safe construction.
