Abstract  In order to evaluate the technical condition of an expressway tunnel lining structure, a recursion order hierarchical structure model-which consisted of a target level, factor level and index level-was proposed. Many uncertainties affecting the tunnel lining structure were analyzed and an entropy-weight fuzzy matter-element model was put forward based on matter-element theory, fuzzy sets and information entropy theory. Application to one expressway tunnel shows that before the tunnel was handed over the technical condition of the lining structure was at the 1A level, and the degree of damage was at an ordinary level. Additionally, concrete cracks and cavities behind the linings were the main factors affecting the evaluation. The uncertainties of evaluation indexes were considered and subjective weights and objective weights were combined in this method, which reduces the subjectivity of traditional evaluation and improves the objectivity of results.
