Abstract   Based on the measurement of temperature and water volumes of a testing tunnel, it was determined that the water volume and temperatures of the shallow rock mass behind the lined tunnel in a cold region changed over time, a problem which cannot be solved by increasing the temperature inside the tunnel or behind the lining. Comprehensive measures have been adopted and are addressed in this paper, which include: rock mass grouting at the tunnel crown, the application of a water-proof board that exhibits high flexibility at low temperatures, surface finishing of shotcrete, the laying of a water-proof layer using the LV method, using construction joints with drainable water stops, implementing toroidal drainpipes through to the central drain pipe and local heat preservation, installing an insulating layer behind the lower corner of the lining and the embedding of wire pipes.
