Abstract  Based on the geological conditions of the Chuanzhusi Tunnel, which passes through an ancient landslide, a site investigation found that the surrounding rock deformation and failure modes of the tunnel are mainly tunnel collapse, spalling and dropping. The three-dimensional finite element numerical simulation of the stability of surrounding rock by FLAC3D showed that the self-stability of the fractured rock mass is poor and the deformation modes are mainly of the elastic-plastic and relaxation varieties. Support with an H-beam steel framework played a positive role regarding the stability of fractured surrounding rock
