Abstract It is necessary to evaluate the interrelationship of an intercity railroad tunnel and an adjacent building, since the construction under the existing building will result in ground settlement, endangering the safety of the building. This paper systematically studies this relationship using sensitivity analysis regarding different construction methods and geological conditions by taking the tunnel, foundation, and superstructure as a whole and evaluates the effects of various construction measures. The results show that: the ground affected by the base pile end has a great impact on building settlement, internal structural force, and sequential treating measures; a pile foundation right above the tunnel or with an angle of 45 degrees is greatly influenced by tunnel excavation; the settlement and internal force of the building after shield construction are lower than if a mining method were used; the effect of underpinning the pile foundation is better than that of ground reinforcement, but the former increases the local deformation and internal force of the building; and the internal force may increase near the place where the building load exists.
