Abstract In this paper, the risk assessment of a metro tunnel near a highway bridge is studied and the concept of specialized design is put forward based on assessment results. Firstly, the safety risk influence factors are identified based on comprehensive investigations and engineering experience, and the risk evaluation index system aiming at safety is established. Secondly, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is adopted to calculate the relative weight of each factor in the index system to estimate the main risk sources. Finally, with a focus on ground reinforcement, underground water control, and reducing effects on the adjacent building foundation, a specialized design for the running tunnel section near the Lingshuihe No. 2 Bridge is established in terms of the construction method, engineering measures, and monitoring and measurements. During the construction process, the monitoring data of both the surroundings and the tunnel structure were within the thresholds specified in the control specifications, ensuring construction safety and stability, as well as safe operation of the adjacent highway bridge.
