Abstract Based on the construction of the Zhengzhou-Xi′an and Baoji-Lanzhou high-speed railways, an experimental study on the practicability of construction methods for large-section loess tunnels was conducted to deter? mine the deformation and stress characteristics of the surrounding rock and bench method supporting system and provide a basis for key construction techniques of large-section loess tunnels. Study results show that the construction of large-section loess tunnels by the bench method is relatively rapid, and the water content in loess is a key influential factor for the deformation and stability of the supporting structure. A technical system is proposed to determine the construction method of large-section loess tunnels by considering different loess water contents.
