Discussion of the Large Deformation Mechanism and Control Measures for a Soft Rock Tunnel under High Ground Stress: A Case Study of the Muzhailing Tunnel

Abstract Large deformation of tunnels in soft rock is a common and major engineering geological hazard that se? verely hampers construction progress and safety. In this paper, using the Muzhailing tunnel on the newly-built Lanzhou–Chongqing railway as an example, the large deformation mechanism of soft rock tunnels is analyzed from the aspects of lithology, underground water, geological structure, ground stress and construction technology, and the failure characteristics of large surrounding rock deformation in the Muzhailing tunnel and corresponding measures are elucidated.
