Abstract Aiming at the stress contact issue of a deeply-buried cavern with a circular lining, an expression for the stress components of the surrounding rock and lining is derived by means of a power-series solution of complex variable function from the perspectives of the boundary and contact conditions. It is verified by solving the generalized solution formula of the axisymmetric stress of the elastic mechanics, and the same exact solution is obtained for elasticity, which verifies the accuracy of this complex variable function and provides new considerations for the solution of stress on the surrounding rock and lining under irregular loading by using a complex variable function.
