Abstract In order to find out the regularity of the general distribution, development trends and relationship of vari? ous influencing factors of traffic accidents in super-long tunnels, and prevent from problems, the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics, form distribution characteristics, types of vehicles distribution characteristics and causes of traffic accident distribution characteristics of super-long tunnels were studied using statistical analysis, comparative analysis and chart analysis based on the Zhongnanshan highway tunnel in Qinling. Some preventive measures such as visual induction technology, surface treatment technology, light transition technology and guide technology for roadside width changes were put forward. The results show that the number of traffic accidents in the first quarter and the third quarter are the highest and the lowest, respectively, for the time period of 2007-2016; the number of traffic accidents in 2014 is the highest, and the number in 2012 is the lowest. The tunnel entrance and exit are the sections most prone to traffic accidents; scraping the road edge and rear end are the most common types of accidents. Driving while fatigued and faulty operation are the main causes of traffic accidents, and passenger cars and trucks are the main vehicles involved in accidents. Traffic accidents may effectively be reduced by taking the above mentioned preventive measures.
