Abstract Taking the driving of the earth pressure balance shield used in Lanzhou metro in water- rich sandy cob? ble stratum with large grain size as the background, a series of studies are conducted regarding serious wear of cutting tools, frequent stucking of cutterhead and screw conveyor, difficulty to reach earth pressure balance and so on,and optimal design is carried out in terms of the type of cutterhead structure, cutterhead opening ratio, cutting tool improvement, rated torque of cutterhead and the screw conveyor. The practice shows that the shield driving efficiency increases by 1 time, the cutterhead torque reduces by 20%, the frequency of cutting tool replacement decreases by about 50%, and the mud-cake and surface settlement controlling are significantly improved.
