Abstract In terms of Class Ⅳ and Class Ⅴ soft surrounding rock, the following problems exist in the tunnel support system of China: poor effect of restricting early deformation of surrounding rock, low construction efficiency, and low economical efficiency. To ensure the tunnel supports can timely provide sufficient supporting force to effectively control the early deformation of surrounding rock and further improve the construction efficiency, this study, employs several study methods, such as data research, numerical simulation and theoretical calculation, etc., puts forward a new tunnel support system based on the Norwegian method Q system, and conducts the feasibility study in terms of economical efficiency and construction efficiency. The study results show that this new tunnel support system is characterized by better economical efficiency and construction efficiency, and the existing construction conditions of China can meet the requirements for the promotion and application of this system.
