Abstract Sections of DK607+800~DK610+050 and DK613+350~DK614+950 of Meilingguan tunnel on Lanzhou-Chongqing railway were designed according to the tunnel with rich gases. While the mechanism of gas explosion is very complex, shock wave, gaseous products and hot solid particles may be involved in the ignition reaction of gas. In view of the characteristics and harm of gas stratum in Meilingguan tunnel, the paper discusses the safety countermeasures for the blasting operation in the construction of the tunnel.
