Abstract This paper presents the main geological problems encountered (shallow overburden, coal seam, gas, fractured zone, fault, karst, water and mud bursts, etc.) and the key points and difficulties of geological prediction in the Tanchang Tunnel. In addition, a detailed analysis of the geological prediction of water and mud burst occurrences in the shallow-buried portal and middle karst sections is discussed in light of the HSP (Horizontal acoustic reflection) prediction technique combined with echolocation. Construction demonstrated that the prediction results agreed very well with the actual situation.
