Abstract It is very common for soft rock tunnels with high ground stress to incur deformation during construction, which causes many difficulties regarding safe construction and efficient management. Based on a soft rock tunnel with high ground stress on the Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway, this paper classifies the soft rock mass and establishes the criteria for primary support failure and the balance between the reasonable ground stress release and effective restraint. As for the design and construction of a soft rock tunnel with high ground stress, such measures as reserved deformation allowance, reasonable primary support, reliable excavation method, and anchoring and grouting reinforcement at key positions were carried out to effectively control the deformation, guaranteeing safe and rapid construction.
