Abstract Considering the four closely spaced, overlapping tunnels of the Ouzhuang interchange station of the Guangzhou Metro lines 5 and 6, the behavior of stress redistribution of the surrounding rock was studied and the relationships between rock stability, internal force of the tunnel support, and support deformation were analyzed. Additionally, a corresponding index for safe construction was proposed and 3D simulation and mechanical calculations were performed regarding the key construction techniques for closely spaced tunnels. This paper introduces a scheme for the simultaneous construction of four tunnels. The results indicate that multiple tunnels constructed at the same time are secure and feasible so long as reasonable stratum reinforcement measures are taken, a tunnel support scheme is adopted, and spacing among the closely spaced multiple tunnels is sufficient.
