Abstract The Fenghuangling tunnel, which is 5896.9m long, is the key project of the Xinzhou-Fuping Expressway in Shanxi province. In light of the steep terrain, the bases of the tunnel and retaining wall were consolidated against bias pressure by vertical grouting with small pipes in a quincunx pattern to enhance the bearing capacity of the ground, followed by the construction of a retaining wall base, the tunnel base, invert, protective reinforced concrete arch, concrete lining, and so on. Moreover, the three-bench seven-step method was applied and normal excavation was carried out after an advance of 15m, ensuring safe excavation of the tunnel entrance without slope cutting.
