Abstract As the classification of tunnel surrounding rock is influenced by many factors, the use of computer technology can avoid the uncertainty caused by human factors and determine the classification of surrounding rock rapidly and properly. By means of computer programming language and database technology, an intelligent surrounding rock classification system for expressway tunnels in mountain areas is developed, including two classification subsystems-one for the design phase and the other for the construction phase. With this software system featuring a clear interface and easy operation, it not only makes rapid qualitative and quantitative analyses of the surrounding rock classification, but also queries, modifies, adds, deletes, and prints the geological information for a working face. In actual application, sound results have been obtained regarding the surrounding rock classification for the Xichang-Panzhihua and Panzhihua-Tianfang expressway tunnels.
