Abstract Most of the tunnels and underground works of railways, highways and water conservancies to be con? structed in north-west China pass through Tertiary system water-rich silty fine sand stratum, and it is very often to encounter water burst, sand inrush and so on, resulting in slowing down construction progress and threatening construction safety as well as adverse effect on water environment in this region. Based on construction of the Humaling tunnel on the Lanzhou-Chongqing railway in water-rich silty fine sand stratum, a new grouting technology with rigid sleeve valve pipe strand, which plays roles of ground anchoring in longitudinal direction to improve the work face stability, and advanced supporting in radial direction to effective restrain the loosening circle and control tunnel deformation, was proposed. With this new grouting technology applied in the Humaling tunnel, it has successfully solved the difficulties of hole drilling, grout diffusion and injectability, improved grouting effect and efficiency and guaranteed the construction safety of tunnel in water-rich silty fine sand.
