Abstract   Using the shifting of a box culvert structure in a certain shallow-buried metro tunnel as an example, this paper introduces the application of the monolithic shifting technique in underground works. In light of a friction force on the base of the box culvert, it analyzes the shifting force and describes the layout of the shifting system and construction procedures. It concludes that it is crucial to keep the stepwise pipe jacking stable and to monitor for displacement and feedback during shifting.
