Design and Construction of the Underpinning of a River-Crossing
Bridge Pile Foundation in a Metro Tunnel

Abstract Using the Shenzhen Metro line 2 passing underneath the Shawan River Bridge as an example, the key techniques for the design and construction of the underpinning of the existing pile foundation in the tunnel are presented, and the rationality of this construction method is verified by theoretical analysis, numerical calculations, and site monitoring. The study results show that the underpinning of an existing pile foundation in a tunnel could minimize the impacts of removing an existing bridge on ground traffic. The key points of this method include preparation of the underpinning principle, determining the underpinning structure and layout, using reasonable procedures for tunnel excavation and pile foundation underpinning, and keeping the settlement and deformation of existing buildings within an allowable range.
