Abstract Based on the Mohecun tunnel on the Shiyan-Tianshui expressway, this paper analyzes the causes for its collapse and compares three treatment schemes in terms of economy, safety and maneuverability. The chosen scheme, in which the lower bench is backfilled with muck; the working platform for upper bench excavation is strengthend as a protective scaffolding; reinforcement is carried out at the front and back sections of the collapse as well as at the collapsed section; sprayed concrete and a secondary lining are applied and the collapsed cavity is backfilled with concrete and dry sand, is proven to be safe, rational, economic, rapid, feasible and effective.
