Abstract Altitude and longitudinal slope are two factors affecting ventilation design of an extra-long highway tun? nel in a plateau area. Based on provided field-measured data regarding the altitude coefficient, and using the Dalijia Mountain Tunnel in Qinghai Province as an example, the altitude coefficients given in the specifications were modified and the required air volume was recalculated. Considering the impact of the longitudinal slope on vehicle speed, the required air volume under the condition of controlled vehicle speed was determined reasonably, providing an important basis for the ventilation scheme.
